Prior to entering the patent field, I earned degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace engineering, with a specialization in materials. I have managed a variety of research & development projects ranging from autonomous vehicles to ceramic composites. Through it all, my work process has sought the balance of what is new and what is possible, and the research skills involved have guided me well through the worlds of information technology and embedded systems.

With intellectual property, I make decisions that might affect an invention for decades. It is fortunate that I have a hunger to gain technical understanding quickly, because that is also my responsibility to my clients. Awareness of design subtlety is very important to this field – I bring the experience and philosophy of an engineer to bear in hopes that, through my efforts, innovation gets the credit and the legal protection it deserves.

To me, writing a patent application or strategizing through the steps of the process is a combination of journalistic discovery and risk analysis. The procedure may change, but the challenges an invention faces before, during, and after acceptance are always grounded in technical reality, as are their solutions. That is a satisfying thing for a lifelong researcher, and I am grateful such a practice allows me to learn from industry leaders, and to contribute to the success of developers pushing boundaries in technology.
